Though a few scant details were given at the 2002 Geneva Auto Show, it wasn't until this year in Paris that these two ultraluxury sedans made their first official motor show appearance. Designed and built by Mercedes-Benz, the 57 and 62 are so exclusive that they even have their own brand name. The Maybach cars of the early 20th century were the epitome of class and elegance in their day, so building a modern-day vehicle that lives up to the reputation was no small task. Mercedes has been testing prototype versions for close to three years now in various locales around the world, while the designers were hard at work in Germany crafting a shape worthy of a car that costs about $300,000. Each model is named after their respective lengths — 6.17 meters in the case of the Maybach 62 and 5.73 meters for the 57. They are powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that makes 550 horsepower and 658 pound-feet of torque. Even though the cars weigh in the three-ton range, 0-to-60 mph acceleration is said to be about 5.5 seconds. A modified Mercedes S-Class five-speed transmission applies power to the rear wheels. The interior will be assembled according to each customer's personal preferences, with numerous shades and textures of wood, leather and carpeting to choose from. Every car will come with a TV tuner, DVD player and universal 600-watt Dolby Surround Sound system, while a sunroof, two-tone paint and a refrigerated compartment are all no-cost options. One can even order custom-made items like luggage, a humidor, a golf bag and a sterling silver champagne goblet. As you would expect, technology has been applied in the fullest. An all-new air suspension will reside underneath that promises an ultrasmooth ride, while electrohydraulic brakes stand by to bring the hulking mass down from speed. The cabin is fitted with 10 airbags, and a variety of Mercedes systems, such as Keyless-Go, Distronic, COMAND and TeleAid, are either standard or optional. In all, it is claimed that there are more than two million different ways a Maybach could be equipped. Why Should You Care? As only a few select people in the world will have the financial ability to purchase a Maybach, most of the interest should be directed toward the sheer superiority and grandeur of it all. — Brent Romans HowStuffWorks.Com "A Maybach is a high-end, ultra-luxury sedan. It can hold up to four passengers in regal splendor. Prices range from $300,000 to $400,000. The Maybach comes in two models -- the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62. The 57 is 5.7 meters long, and the 62 is 6.2 meters long, hence the model names. The two models are very nearly identical except for the length. The extra length of the 62 is used to increase the rear seat leg room. The Maybach 62 also offers several options unavailable in the 57. For example, the 62 has fully reclining rear seats because it has extra leg room available in the rear to accommodate them." [Howstuffworks.com]
